EIGHT  ACRES OF HISTORY: AFRICAN CEMETERY  NO. 2

The February 2012 meeting of  the African-American Genealogy Group of Kentucky
(AAGGKY) will be at 1:00 p.m.  on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Northside
Branch of the Lexington Public  Library. (see parking note)

This month’s presentation will be the film Eight  Acres of History: African Cemetery No.  2, a documentary about a historic African-American cemetery in the heart  of Lexington. Thousands are buried at African Cemetery No. 2, including the  winning jockey of the first Kentucky Derby, a number of Buffalo Soldiers, and a member of the Civil War's 54th Massachusetts Regiment. The 141-year-old cemetery was neglected and overgrown before volunteers began the work of restoring the grounds and gathering the life stories of those buried there.Yvonne Giles, one of the cemetery volunteers, will facilitate a discussion  and hold a question and answer session following the film.
